Hypnotherapy Regulation

Creating Standards Together

Hypnotherapy Regulatory Forum established

“With a unified Register of Members, patients and members of the public would then have a single, reliable point of reference for standards, and would be protected against the risk of poorly-trained practitioners and have redress for poor service”. (House of Lords Select Committee on Science and Technology Report on CAM)

The Working Group for Hypnotherapy Regulation is formed of more than 20 professional organisations that have chosen to work together to progress Voluntary Self Regulation in hypnotherapy and to create agreed standards in all aspects of the profession.

TO DATE (April 2009) OVER 4800 HYPNOTHERAPISTS HAVE SIGNED UP TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS PROCESS - MAKING IT ALREADY THE MOST SIGNIFICANT REGULATORY STEP FORWARD IN U.K. HYPNOTHERAPY.

With its current constitution, the Group, by conservative estimate, represents over 4800 professional practitioners, well over a hundred training schools and numerous professional associations.  Thus some 80% of the known profession is affiliated to the Group and this is an excellent starting place for a mandate.  A full list  of the many organisations and trainers we represent is available on this site (click here.)

The Group has initiated, beginning in 2007, a nationwide programme, with the eventual aim of effective, safe and meaningful Voluntary Self Regulation.  One problem with previous attempts in hypnotherapy to achieve this has been the disagreements between professional bodies which have always led to delays and frustrations.  Having agreed to cooperate and existing under a number of alliances, cooperation agreements, and mutual recognition schemes, the professional organisations within the Group have solved the problem of disagreements between professional bodies which has previously hampered our professional growth. This is a huge step forward and means that hypnotherapy can now begin to earn the confidence of both public and Government.

However, the Group is going much further than this.   It will create concrete regulatory proposals and these will be put directly to all professional hypnotherapists, first for consultation, and then for democratic, one practitioner, one vote, ballot.  A system of independent verification will be adopted.  By “all professional hypnotherapists” we mean whether or not those hypnotherapists belong to organisations which are Group members. All are welcome and included.  The results of the ballots will be widely circulated, including to Government.  In March 2008, we adopted a national Code of Ethics.  We are now consulting on the entry level to the profession.

In addition, in February 2009, the Group established with UKCHO the Hypnotherapy Regulatory Forum as the method of progressing Voluntary Self Regulation across all known organisations, professional bodies, training schools and individual hypnotherapists.  A statement of mutual recognition between the Group and UKCHO can be viewed at the top of our national register.

The Forum is being supported by the Prince's Foundation for Integrated Health and will receive funding from the Department of Health.

Thus all professional bodies known to the Group, whether or not they are members, will have the opportunity to allow their members to participate in the largest and most comprehensive democratic regulatory exercise known to the profession.  This will ensure the widest possible participation from all practitioners.

If you are a professional body, The Group will welcome applications from those professional bodies which can work constructively and demonstrate positive participation in our programme.  This will mean two things.  First of all, any applicant should first negotiate and agree to a publicly announced cooperation agreement of mutual recognition and support with the professional bodies within the group.  This will ensure that all bodies within the group have already taken steps to cooperate, support, and recognise each other and will demonstrate the professional unity necessary for the Group to function long term.  Secondly, any applicant must publicly support the aims and intentions of the Group and ensure that their members are notified of their rights to vote in our VSR programme.  This will ensure that all bodies within the group are active participants and allow their members to exercise their democratic rights.

If you are a hypnotherapist  you should be informed about your rights to vote, whatever your professional affiliation - and to participate in the most comprehensive exercise of its kind ever undertaken.

If you are a hypnotherapy trainer, we welcome your full partcipation whatever your professional affiliation, and invite you to ensure that your staff, students and graduates are kept informed of our progress and their rights to vote.  You can contact us to join our Schools Forum.

You may now sign up to participate in our democractic process.  Clicking the link below will allow you to subscribe to our free e-newsletter which will contain details of the regulatory agenda, consultation exercises, and voting procedures.

Your details will only be used to send you the e-newsletter, will not be passed to any third parties, and you can unsubscribe at any time.
